The state now has a national trophy and a residential academy, yet Telangana girls football still has no public count of players.
India’s first FIFA Talent Academy for girls opened in Hyderabad in June 2026. A few months before that, Telangana won its first national trophy in the girls’ game. Both sit in the federation’s own records. Still, the basic figure behind Telangana girls football goes unpublished. Nobody can say how many girls in the state play at all.
A First National Trophy for Telangana Girls Football
The Junior Girls’ National Football Championship has run every year since 2001, starting in Goa. Today it runs across two tiers, and Manipur has won 11 of the 17 titles.
In the 2024-25 season, Manipur took the Tier 1 title at Anantapur, beating Jharkhand 2-0. Then Telangana’s own result came in Tier 2, played at Belgaum in Karnataka. There the state beat Manipur 4-2 on penalties. So Telangana took a first national football trophy at any level.
What the Academy at Gachibowli Offers
The academy grew out of an agreement between the football federation and the state government. Both sides signed it on 2 August 2025, at the first Telangana Sports Conclave in Hyderabad.
It sits inside the Gachibowli Stadium Complex and takes 60 players. Thirty are boys at under-14 level, while 30 are girls at under-16. Ten places in each group go to players from Telangana. The players live on site and get training, schooling, medical care and nutrition through the year.
The federation runs scouting, coaching and the training programme. Meanwhile the Sports Authority of Telangana looks after infrastructure, logistics, education and welfare. The academy opened formally on 19 June 2026.
The Number Telangana Girls Football Does Not Report
The federation runs a central registration system, and it publishes a live page for every state association. Telangana’s page currently shows 3,631 registered players. Of those, 870 renewed this season. The page also lists 90 approved clubs, 11 registered districts, six grounds, 258 coaches and 79 referees.
Every one of those figures is a combined total. None of them separates boys from girls.
The federation has released that split once, and only at national level. In March 2024 it reported 27,936 registered female footballers, against 11,724 in June 2022. That figure covers the whole country, though, and it is two years old.
The Wise Take
An academy of 60 places will train a few players very well. That is what the FIFA Talent Development Scheme sets out to do. Still, it says nothing about how many girls play in schools and clubs statewide. Only registration data can show that. The federation’s system already records the gender of every player, because it has published a national split before. So a state-by-state breakdown would settle a simple question. Does Telangana girls football have a trophy and an academy because something wider is shifting, or did two results simply land close together?
